Jelena Zlatar Gamberožić, PhD is the author of the review paper “Comparison of developmental trends of tourism on the examples of settlements on the islands of Hvar and Brač: How to proceed?“, published in the proceedings Tourism and housing: proceedings of the scientific-professional e-colloquium held on 17 May 2021, in collaboration with the journal Mjera. The Editors are Nikola Bašić and Saša Poljanec-Borić.
The subject of this paper is an overview of the results of a longitudinal case study of the town of Povlja on the island of Brač in two periods, 2009 and 2019, research of Postira (2014) and Bol (2015) on the island of Brač and the city of Hvar on the island of Hvar (2020). The aim of these studies was to determine the current state of tourism in these places with regard to the dimensions of sustainable development: ecological, economic, cultural and social dimensions, and further perspectives of their tourist development. It was also an attempt to determine how much three scenarios for the development of tourism are possible: mass tourism, rural and ecotourism, and stagnation for a particular place. Research shows different types of development in places on Brač, from mass tourism (Bol) through sustainable tourism (Postira) to stagnation (Povlja). A case study in Hvar mostly shows the presence of the first, mass type of tourism that is already proved to be infrastructurally problematic in many places on the islands. It also points to the presence of spontaneous tourism development, i.e. unplanned tourism, which also results in a loss of development direction.
