Final conference of the CSF project IDEU was held

The final conference of the project “Integration and disintegration of the European Union: Dynamics of Europeanism and Euroscepticism – IDEU“ was held on 13 February 2025 in the House of Europe in Zagreb.

After Nikola Petrović, PhD, the project principal investigator, welcomed the audience with an introductory word, the conference was opened by Frank Schimmelfennig (ETH Zürich) who held a plenary lecture titled “Crisis and Boundary Formation in the European Union”.

In the first session, dedicated to European challenges, Nikola Petrović tackled the Russian invasion of Ukraine and consequential cleavages in Europe. The project team member Adrijana Martinović, PhD (Faculty of Law of the University of Rijeka) held the presentation “Optional Protection under Temporary Protection Directive: the CJEU's Kaduna Case“, and Ana Maskalan, PhD (ISRZ) presented the topic titled “Women’s Rights in Supranational Identity-Building: Socialist Yugoslavia vs. the EU“.

In the session dedicated to Croatia in the EU, Marko Mrakovčić, PhD (Faculty of Law of the University of Rijeka) discussed what draws us in and what pulls us away from the European Union. Filip Fila, PhD (ISRZ) held the lecture titled “Perception of the EU in the Midst of Geopolitical Perturbations: Key Insights from the Study of Croatian Citizens and the Political Elite“, and Višeslav Raos, PhD (Faculty of Political Science of the University of Zagreb) discussed determinants of support for the common currency on the example of Croatia. Stevo Đurašković, PhD (Faculty of Political Science of the University of Zagreb) held the lecture titled “Illiberalism in Croatia: 'National neoliberalism' against 'Welfare Chauvinism'?“.

Project team members are also the following researchers: Ivan Obadić, PhD (Faculty of Law of the University of Zagreb), Josip Bilić (ISRZ), Ivan Roško (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb) and Natasza Styczyńska, PhD (Institute of European Studies, The Jagiellonian University).

The project is financed by the Croatian Science Foundation.
