Anđelina Svirčić Gotovac and Jelena Zlatar Gamberožić participated in The Summer School “Waterscapes in Heritage and Environment” organized by the University of Bergamo, University of Belgrade and University of Rijeka on 19 September 2022. They held a presentation titled “New locality on Adriatic island and coastal local communities”. The authors presented results of a research on the peripherisation and dislocation of some Adriatic islands (Brač and Hvar), which often lead to many social, economic, demographic and cultural problems that put the mentioned islands in an unequal and imbalanced position compared to local communities on the coast. The social dimension of sustainability is particularly emphasised, that is, the position of the local community on the islands and its interrelatedness, the main actors and their roles, and the agency of the local community. Coastal communities are on the other hand less isolated, and therefore more exposed to various negative consequences of mass tourism (e.g. apartmanisation and betonisation), which makes them less sustainable, both ecologically and socially. In the context of the theoretical concept of social sustainability, smaller islands (and smaller places on larger islands), but also smaller coastal places, can be more sustainable than larger places, nevertheless largely depending on existing human capital and the local community.
